gas fireplace safety tips

The winters here in Canada are long, cold, and harsh, but at least you get to enjoy a cozy fire right in your living room. A fireplace can be an excellent source of heat with just a click of a button, but not many of us stop and think when it comes to fireplace safety. Are gas fireplaces safe? Are they good for the environment? Today we’ll be addressing all your concerns about the gas fireplace.

Flammable Materials
I bet you saw this one coming. One of the benefits of choosing gas over a wood fireplace is the removal of red-hot sparks. However, just because the fire can’t escape doesn’t necessarily mean it is safe. The unit’s glass, metal, and ceramic components reach extreme temperatures when in use. Some objects can and will ignite if left too close. There should be at least three feet of space between the gas fireplace and flammable items such as curtains or rugs. Be sure to never place or hang anything that isn’t supposed to be there.

Carbon Monoxide
These fireplaces are generally safe, but like all other gas appliances, they produce carbon monoxide. The slightest mistake could put every occupant in your home at risk. It’s not easy to tell if there’s a leak since carbon monoxide has no smell, colour, or taste, therefore, the early symptoms of poisoning are subtle. Carbon monoxide testers are vital to your family’s safety, even if you don’t use the fireplace often. You should install at least one on each floor.

Safety Screens
Most gas fireplaces come with a tempered glass window to provide a view of the fire within. Although this glass is designed to withstand high temperatures, its surface becomes extremely hot. The window to your gas fireplace can reach a temperature of 200°C within only six minutes of turning it on, remaining hot over an hour after it turns off. Burns can occur in a split second, which is especially dangerous to young children. Buy a safety screen with your fireplace to prevent this from happening.

Careful When Cleaning
Like any other surface in your home, the fireplace’s glass window needs a good cleaning every now and then. However, it’s important that you follow the manufacturer’s guidance on how to clean it properly. One of the most basic rules is to never wipe the glass with a damp cloth while it’s hot, as this could cause the glass to crack.
